As i graduated school the first, the second and the third time; the wise older men in my circle said with much conviction that the world was my oyster. I went forth the first time, truly believing this, the second time with some doubt and the third in serious confusion as with more qualifications at a tender age of 26, this said oyster was nowhere to be found.
The truth is, that we graduate with a ship. The ship metaphorically being your education, your training or whatever upbringing you may have that has equipped you to survive this world. The ease with which you navigate the sea of opportunities is based solely on the ammunition you have with you on this ship represented by the key skills you have in acquiring a job, starting a business or the links you have to help you get there.

The sea navigation process is directly linked to your ammunition: exactly what skills do you have in job seeking, business development and niche discovery. Money wise, what investment capital do you have to tap into or can you generate on your own to assist you in your search for ‘oysters’.
The one ‘oyster’ searching’ skill that you MUST have is the ability to find where these beds of oysters are. Whats are the general signs of Oyster beds? What geographic locations? Weather conditions? Sea conditions are we looking for? Basically what are the signs of fertile grounds for jobs or business development? what are the signs that there is an exploitable Niche in the area?
When you find this Niche you need to get there and start harvesting these oysters, however you will be faced with yet another challenge: How to dive? These are basically the Niche research and development tools or the job application and acquisition skills. What tools will you need to dive in or acquire the market or succeed in the interview? How to determine the depth of the dive and how much time you will need in there to reach the bed of oysters and harvest them. Some people are born with this skill, some experiment and hit the jackpot, some, like me have to develop it overtime. The development process consists of a costly trial and error procedure and your success depends on how good you are at managing time and money.
Once you have successfully collected your Oyster, got the job or launched the business, it is time to collect the pearls. Now, what is the pearl? Either the skill set of doing the job from working at that organization, the networking skills required to build your client base, the service delivery skill to satisfy your customer and all that. These are all important skills and are all equally applied in EVERY situation business owner or employed alike. It is the same set of skills just at different levels.
Now harvest the pearl. This is where it gets tricky. HOW do you identify the oyster with the pearl? (trail and error) You actually have to open all the oysters to see which ones have the pearl blister.
So the truth is, you are either lucky or you are not. You may find a niche but it may not put you in a better position then you were before. You may find the oysters but maybe you harvested them too early? But what do you do? Give up… nope, you mark that bed of oysters and you keep searching, constantly returning to re-explore and THAT is the truth about the worldly oyster.
